Yes, it is safe to charge an electric car in the rain, and in snow, sleet and humid weather. Charging equipment is specifically engineered for outdoor use. Public chargers are rated to keep water out, connectors are sealed and shrouded so that pins are never exposed to the elements, and β most importantly β no current flows until the car and charger have confirmed a secure, properly earthed connection. If water ever caused leakage, the residual-current protection would cut the power in a fraction of a second.
How the design keeps you safe
- The pins are recessed inside the plug and the socket, so rain cannot bridge them.
- The plug locks into the car and seals against the port.
- Power is only enabled after the pilot handshake confirms the connection.
- Ground-fault / residual-current devices monitor for any leakage.

Sensible precautions
- Don't plug in a cable that has been sitting in a puddle with the connector face down; shake it out and check it is clear of standing water.

- In snow, clear ice from the port so the plug can seat and lock properly.
- Home charging should use a properly installed outdoor-rated wallbox, never an indoor socket run outside with an extension lead.

Is it safe to plug in with wet hands?
The connector's pins are not live until it is locked and the handshake is complete, so ordinary damp hands are not a hazard. Dry them anyway for a good grip.
