The US is mid-way through a big charging shift — here's what plugs, networks and prices to expect today.

The United States has one of the world's fastest-growing charging networks, with well over 160,000 public charging ports and federal funding (the NEVI program) building out fast chargers along highway corridors. The headline story right now is a connector transition: the industry is moving from CCS1 to Tesla's NACS plug.
Connectors you'll meet
- J1772 (Type 1) — the standard AC connector for home and destination charging.
- CCS1 — the main DC fast-charging plug on most non-Tesla EVs sold through the mid-2020s.
- NACS — Tesla's connector, now adopted by nearly every major automaker; new cars increasingly ship with a NACS port, and adapters bridge the two worlds.
- CHAdeMO — legacy DC plug (older Nissan Leaf); fading out.
In transition: if your car has CCS1, Tesla's Supercharger network is opening up via adapters; if it's a newer NACS car, a CCS1 adapter lets you use older stations. Check which port your specific model has.
