The honest answer is 'it depends' β but on just two things. Here's how to estimate charging time for any car and any charger in a few seconds.
Charging time depends on how much energy you need to add and how fast it's flowing in. Everything else is detail. Once you can estimate those two numbers you can predict any charging session closely enough to plan around it.
The one formula worth knowing
Time (hours) β energy to add (kWh) Γ· charging power (kW). If you need to add 30 kWh and you're on a 7.4 kW home charger, that's about 30 Γ· 7.4 β 4 hours. On a 50 kW rapid charger the same 30 kWh takes about 36 minutes. That's the whole idea β the rest is knowing which power figure to use.
Typical real-world times
- Home, 3-pin portable cable (~2 kW): overnight and then some β fine as a backup, not a daily plan.
- Home wallbox (7.4 kW): a full charge overnight, comfortably.
- Public AC (11β22 kW): a useful top-up while you shop or eat.
- Rapid DC (50 kW): 20% to 80% in roughly 45β60 minutes for a typical car.
- Ultra-rapid DC (150 kW+): 20% to 80% in 20β30 minutes on a car that supports it.
Why '20% to 80%' keeps coming up
For DC fast charging, the sweet spot is 20% to 80%. Below 20% and above 80% the car deliberately charges more slowly to protect the battery, so the middle band is where you get the most range per minute. On a long trip, several short charges to 80% is usually faster overall than one long charge to 100%.
Cold weather slows charging, especially DC, because a cold battery accepts power more slowly. Many cars can pre-condition (warm) the battery on the way to a rapid charger to reduce this.
Planning it in practice
In everyday use you rarely charge from empty β you top up. Most drivers plug in at home and start each day full, using public rapid charging only on longer journeys.
