kW vs kWh: EV Charging Units Made Simple

kW measures how fast; kWh measures how much. Get these two straight and every charger, price and battery spec suddenly makes sense.
Almost every confusing thing about EV charging comes down to mixing up two units: the kilowatt (kW) and the kilowatt-hour (kWh). They look similar but mean completely different things — and once the difference clicks, charging times, prices and battery sizes all become easy to reason about.
kW = power (the speed of charging)
A kilowatt is a rate — how fast energy flows into your battery right now. A 7 kW home charger delivers energy seven times faster than a 1 kW plug; a 150 kW rapid charger is faster still. The kW you actually get is the lowest of three limits: the charger's maximum, your car's maximum, and (for AC) your car's on-board charger.
kWh = energy (the amount you store and pay for)
A kilowatt-hour is an amount of energy — what the battery holds and what you're billed for. A 50 kWh battery stores about 50 kWh of energy. Charging networks price per kWh, so kWh is the number on your receipt.
Simple analogy: kW is the width of the tap (flow rate); kWh is how much water ends up in the bucket. A wide tap (high kW) fills the bucket faster, but the bucket size (kWh) is what you pay for.
How to use both numbers
Two quick mental sums cover almost everything you need:
- Charging time (rough): energy needed (kWh) ÷ charging power (kW) = hours. Adding 30 kWh at 7 kW takes about 4 hours; the same 30 kWh at 50 kW takes about 36 minutes.
- Charging cost: energy added (kWh) × price per kWh. Adding 30 kWh at $0.30/kWh costs about $9.
- Range added: energy added (kWh) ÷ your car's consumption. At roughly 6 km per kWh, 30 kWh is about 180 km.

That's the whole trick: whenever you see a charging number, ask "is this a speed (kW) or an amount (kWh)?" and it stops being jargon.
Frequently asked questions
Is a bigger kW number always better?
Only up to your car's limit. If your EV accepts a maximum of 50 kW DC, a 150 kW charger still only delivers 50 kW to it — you just won't be slowed by the charger.
Does kWh change how fast I charge?
No. kWh is the amount of energy; kW is the speed. A bigger battery (more kWh) takes longer to fill at the same kW, but the kWh figure itself doesn't set the speed.
Which number is on my electricity bill?
kWh. Home electricity and public charging are both billed per kilowatt-hour of energy used.
