Charging Your EV with Renewable Energy: Solar, Green Tariffs & Timing

An EV is only as clean as the electricity that goes into it. The good news is that you have far more control over that than a petrol driver ever had over their fuel.

1. Charge from your own solar
If you have rooftop solar, charging from it is the cleanest and cheapest energy you will ever put in a car. A typical 4–6 kW home system produces 15–30 kWh on a sunny day — enough for 80–150 km of driving. The trick is to charge while the sun is shining. Many smart home chargers have a 'solar mode' that only charges from surplus solar, ramping the rate up and down as clouds pass, so nothing is drawn from the grid. A home battery lets you shift that solar energy to an evening charge.
2. Choose a green tariff
Most electricity retailers now offer tariffs backed by renewable generation certificates, and several offer EV-specific tariffs with a very cheap overnight window. A tariff that is both green and time-of-use is ideal: you charge cheaply at night while paying for renewable supply.
3. Charge when the grid is greenest
The carbon intensity of grid electricity changes hour by hour. In windy regions it is often lowest overnight; in sunny regions it is lowest in the middle of the day. Free apps and grid-operator websites show live and forecast carbon intensity, and many smart chargers and car apps can schedule charging automatically for the cleanest hours. Doing this can cut the emissions of a charge by a third or more compared with plugging in at the evening peak.

4. Look for renewable public charging
Many charging networks buy 100% renewable electricity or install solar canopies over their sites. If you rely on public charging, favouring those operators is an easy way to lower your footprint.
Charging at the cleanest times usually also means charging at the cheapest times — good for the planet and your bill at once.
