Cold gets the attention, but heat is what ages a lithium battery. If you live somewhere hot, a few habits make a real difference to how long your battery lasts.

Lithium-ion cells are happiest at roughly the same temperatures people are — around 15–30 °C. Above that, the chemical side-reactions that slowly reduce capacity speed up, and the effect compounds when the battery is also held at a high state of charge. A car parked in the sun at 100% on a 40 °C day is under more stress than the same car at 50% in the shade. Modern EVs manage this with liquid cooling, but the cooling only runs when the car is on or charging, and it uses energy.
What accelerates wear in the heat
- Leaving the car at a very high state of charge for days in hot weather.
- Repeated fast charging when the battery is already hot from driving.
- Parking in direct sun with no shade for long periods.
- Storing the car unplugged and unused for weeks in the heat.
Habits that protect the battery
- Set a daily charge limit of around 70–80% and charge to 100% only right before a long trip.
- Park in shade or a garage whenever you can; a sunshade helps the cabin, and a cooler cabin helps the pack below it.
- Charge in the cooler hours — overnight or early morning — which is usually also the cheapest time.
- Let the car precondition the battery before fast charging; in hot weather it may cool the pack rather than warm it.
- Don't panic about lower charging speeds on hot days — the car is deliberately slowing to protect itself.
- For long-term storage, leave the car at around 50%, plugged in if the manufacturer recommends it, in the shade.
Cabin and safety
A parked EV heats up like any car. Use the app to pre-cool the cabin before you get in (while still plugged in, so it uses grid power rather than range). Never leave people or pets in a parked car in the heat relying on the battery unless a dedicated climate mode is active and confirmed.
