There are four broad choices today: a conventional petrol or diesel car, a self-charging hybrid (HEV), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with a small battery you can charge, and a full battery electric vehicle (BEV). Their emissions depend on how you use them — especially the plug-in hybrid.

The plug-in hybrid problem
Official PHEV figures assume the car is charged almost every day and driven mostly on electricity. Independent studies of real-world data have found that many PHEVs — particularly company cars — are charged far less often, so they run on petrol while carrying a heavy battery, and their real emissions can be two to four times the official number. A PHEV is genuinely clean only if you plug it in nearly every day and most of your trips fit within its electric range.
Where a full EV wins
- Lowest lifetime emissions in almost every country, improving as the grid cleans up.
- Lowest running cost, especially with home or off-peak charging.
- Least maintenance — no engine, gearbox, exhaust or oil.
- Zero tailpipe pollution in cities.
Where a hybrid still makes sense
If you truly cannot charge — no home, workplace or reliable public charging — a conventional hybrid cuts fuel use by a quarter to a third with no change in habits. It is a stepping stone rather than a destination, but a real improvement over a plain petrol car.
Rule of thumb: if you can plug in at home or work, a full EV is the cleanest and cheapest choice. If you cannot, a conventional hybrid beats a rarely-charged plug-in hybrid.
