Road transport is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise — and electrification is the tool that makes it possible.

Transport produces roughly a quarter of global energy-related CO₂ emissions, and road vehicles are about three-quarters of that. Unlike electricity, where wind and solar can replace fossil plants directly, cutting transport emissions requires changing what hundreds of millions of vehicles run on. Electric vehicles, powered by an increasingly clean grid, are the main route to doing that at scale.

Why EVs are the right tool
- Efficiency — an EV uses around a third of the energy of a petrol car for the same distance, so even fossil electricity goes further.
- It gets cleaner automatically — every wind farm and solar park added to the grid reduces the emissions of every EV already on the road.
- It cuts oil imports and exposure to fuel-price shocks.
- It removes tailpipe pollution from cities immediately.
What still has to happen
Electric cars alone do not solve transport. Grids need to add renewables and storage fast enough to keep up; charging infrastructure must be reliable and universal; heavy trucks, shipping and aviation need their own solutions; and cities still need to shift trips to walking, cycling and public transport, because a smaller, lighter vehicle fleet needs fewer batteries and less energy. EVs are necessary for net zero, but not sufficient on their own.
